The E.W. Scripps Company is seeking a VP, Strategy and Business Development.The vice president of next gen strategy and business development will identify, develop and evaluate investment and partnership opportunities, and lead enterprise efforts to build businesses, develop partnerships and advance our material interests to create value related to Next Gen Television and the deployment of the ATSC 3.0 standard. This role will develop innovative solutions with the aim of commercialization and will advance Scripps role in the evolution over-the-air (OTA) broadcasting and connected media.With ATSC 3.0 being the first-ever Internet Protocol (IP) based broadcast standard and inherently designed to combine broadcasting with broadband services, this position will explore opportunities beyond the traditional transmission of video and audio, and proactively develop opportunities unique to the wireless IP delivery of data.  

Duties and Responsibilities

Focus on complex and strategic issues, new business models, and accretive opportunities. 

Study, develop and commercialize Next Gen Television opportunities in areas such as effective spectrum utilization, single frequency networks, wireless data applications, multicast channels, interactive applications, data analytics, automotive opportunities, and virtual MVPD platforms.This includes developing affiliate/partner relationships with other key players to extend the company’s efficacy and influence. 

Develop and present investment thesis for strategic new media investment activity.

Develop and present data-informed points of view for Board and companywide consideration

Strategic focus on audience and revenue growth

Provide thought leadership in new and innovative trends and businesses models

Develop affiliate/partner relationships with other key players to extend the company’s influence

Track new markets and emerging trends

Identify early stage business opportunities and develop new businesses

Monitor market dynamics and the competitive landscape.

Develop affiliate/partner relationships with other key players to extend the company’s influence

Create greater efficacy for advertisers with increased personalization and create efficiency in our businesses by enabling them to reach and monetize larger advertising markets.

Monitor market dynamics and the competitive landscape

Drive growth by identifying, executing, and managing strategic partnerships in collaboration with business leaders and cross-functional teams

Source new partnership opportunities through analyzing industry trends, the competitive landscape, and key industry players.

Evaluate and analyze distribution opportunities

Engage and influence senior level key stakeholders by supporting development of messaging and materials

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to inform and guide partnership strategies based on business need

Cultivate, develop and maintain strategic partner relationships as well as leading new opportunity development efforts from concept to delivery.

Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Academic and Job Experience

BS/BA in communications, business administration or related field.

MS/MBA with technology focus preferred

Minimum 10 years of experience working in media industry or related field.

Minimum 15 years of experience in a strategic development role.

Demonstrated ability as a self-starter with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think independently.

Data gathering, measurement and viewer behavior are critical considerations

Knowledge and understanding of the current and developing strategic information requirements of a major public company.

Knowledge of current trends and developments in the media industry.

Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies with a diverse mix of employees, vendors, business partners and consumers.

Ability to foster a cooperative, collaborative work environment.

Effective use of the Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel and Word.

Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.

Skill in strategic planning, change management and leadership.

Successful product launches with major digital platforms that scale.
