He earned his PhD in labor and demography/cultural economics and policy from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Smith areas of expertise include cultural economics, labor economics, and the economics of the arts, sports, and religion. He has served as a consultant for organizations in the arts, music, and entertainment industries.
