My mentor really really listened. He asked questions that went directly to who I was and what I cared about. When he realized that my skill set and passion did not fit a standard employment niche, he shifted the conversation from how to "find a job" to " let's figure out how to do the work you care about ." He made me feel that he was excited about the things that I was excited about...He seemed as if he was invested in my success. My discussion with Geoff made me feel like, well, if someone with the professional muster behind him can "meet" me and quickly feel that my ideas are great and my qualifications are stellar..... well then I need to buck up and get back on the horse and see where she takes me.

My mentoring session was inspiring and enlightening, and less intimidating than I thought it would be. When I was laid off I saw an opportunity to revisit my passion for writing. I figured a mentor might help to point me in the right direction for achieving some of my long-term career goals. The match with my mentor worked because she was in the same field and had similar experiences to me, as well as some experiences I aspire to. My mentor suggested helpful resources to look into, but more importantly, our conversation crystallized the next steps I want to take in my career path.
